south, the right two lanes on that highway shut down, all after a very bizarre accident this afternoon. >> reporter: crews hard at work, removing an overhead highway sign, damaged in a midafternoon accident, involving this massive flatbed truck, hauling an excavator. state police explaining it all unfolded at around 1:30, near i- 95, when the truck struck an overpass. >> the driver apparently failed to lower part of the excavator. and when he came under this bridge, the boom of the excavator hit the bridge, damaged the highway sign, struck the bridge. the operator continued on through and pulled to the side of the road. >> reporter: that accident now snarling traffic on what are two of the busiest highways during rush hour. and that's likely to continue into the evening, as officials inspect the bridge to make sure it has not been compromised. >> reporter: a live look from sky eye chopper 13. you can see that the work here

continues. it is a long line of traffic backups on 695. problems on 95 as well. meanwhile, that bridge inspection is going to continue into the night. a lot of these cars finally getting through some of this traffic now. that inspection continues into the night. the driver of that truck, likely going to be facing charges when this is all over. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. our complete coverage continues now with wjz traffic control. kristy breslin as a closer look at those backups. we saw all of those lights stretching for a long way, kristy. >> unfortunately, yes, mary. and that's already a difficult spot on the outer loop of the beltway, at the 95 southbound overpass. the two right-hand lanes are blocked. the delay, as you can see, stretches back to almost 795. if you're going in that direction, you can expect at least 30 minutes to get through the delay. now, as far as the other side, it's also impacting traffic on the inner loop. things are slow from 70 up to liberty road in that direction.

but they do break free after that. so the best-case scenario is to avoid the southwest side of the outer loop at all costs. we'll continue to bring you up to date. back to you. >> right now, an investigation is under way, after a person is hit and killed by a light rail train in baltimore county. denise is in the newsroom with more on what happened. >> reporter: well, vic, a woman died this morning after she was struck by a train. it happened around 7: 00 a.m., in the central corridor around trutherville. transit officials are not sure why she crossed the tracks. she was not near a light rail stop when she was hit. the mta set up a shuttle bus service to transport patients to different spots while the investigation is still under way. police are also looking into the incident. desire a family is devastated tonight, after their loved one is shot by city police officers. officers, though, say the man had a knife and refused to drop it. mike hellgren has the unfolding

investigation for us. >> police have identified the man they thought of as franklin williams. he remains in critical condition. >> reporter: the ca -- chaotic scene unfolded after police responded to a call about a family disturbance. it was on moral -- morly street. when they got to the home, officers say they found franklin williams in an upstairs bedroom, holding a knife. they tried to get him to put it down. but they say he would not. so they shot him, several times. >> i heard three shots. gunshots. >> reporter: neighbor shannon then remembers hearing williams' mother cry out. >> you said she was in tears. >> yeah. oh, yeah. >> reporter: but her son was still alive and was rushed to the hospital. as of this point, police have not identified the officer who fired the shots. >> william's sister was too shaken to speak to wjz.

she did tell our news partner, the sun, the brother suffers from schizophrenia and lives with his parents. here's how police described what happened, calling his parents, unruly and argumentative. >> he began to advance at police officers that night, after numerous commands. police officers asked him to drop the knife. he did not comply and was shot. >> this saturday 11th police shooting is this year. internal affairs is investigating. >> and that is routine in cases like this. reporting live at city police headquarters, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. mary? >> all right. the officers and other family be members were not injured. a man holds up a bank. officers arrested the man about 20 minutes later near the liberal arts building. police say it activated the alert system to notify people inside.

hundreds from the law enforcement community attended the funeral for 39-year-old derek kraus. he was making a traffic stop last thursday when police say a student from a nearby college walked up to his cruiser and shot him. investigators believe the attack was unprovoked. kraus is survived by a white and five children. a towson position at the center of a massive malpractice investigation said he considers taking its own -- his own life. now, many are upset by those comentdzs from dr. mark miday. >> reporter: some of the patients are outraged by dr. meday's weekend comments, saying they're the ones who suffered, not him. >> reporter: in his first extended interview, since being accused of performing unnecessary medical procedures, dr. mark meday exclusively tells our newspaper partner, the baltimore sun -- >> it has been incalculable. >> he said he has been stripped

from his identity. he found himself under federal investigation. since then, more than 200 patients have filed lawsuits. and he lost his medical license. >> i think he deserves everything he gets. >> vicky mars is one patient who claims dr. meday performed a stent surgery for a blocked artery, which another doctor later found unclogged. >> he said i had a 10%. and he said i had 90% and that i needed the stent. >> reporter: her attorney claims miday's depression comments are an attempt to influence jurors in potential lawsuits that could go to trial next spring. >> i can't wait for attorneys to get on this. everyone that hears this is shocked, with good reason. >> reporter: meday maintains his innocence, telling the sun, i've never treated a single patient that didn't need to be treated. every one of them needed the treatment and they received high-quality care. he went on to say that public doubt has been difficult. >> it's been an extreme challenge to get through each

the deadline for the towz to withdraw from iraq is only three weeks away. iraq is meeting with president obama to discuss the turnover. tara mergener reports. president obama and iraqi prime minister nouri al-maliki stood side by side at arlington, laying a wreath for those who died fighting the war in iraq. al-maliki visited washington, as the u.s. prepares to withdraw all remaining u.s. fighting forces. president obama is keeping a pledge to end the almost nine-

it is 5:29. 39 degrees with just a few clouds out there. good evening, everybody. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. updating the breaking situation. an oversized truck smashes into an overpass, causing traffic delays for miles. sky eye chopper 13 over the scene with the latest. complete coverage -- captain mike perry is above it with more for us. >> we are, indeed, over top of the southwest side of the beltway. this is the outer loop to 695 and i-95. we're about 1:30 this afternoon, this truck that you referred to, with an excavator on the back, struck the bridge overpass. at i-95. and a sign. what you're looking at is about 15 pieces of that state highway administration apparatus. they are here, surveying the damage.

apparently a sign was struck and has been removed from the bridge. but there is structural damage to a girder underneath. and that apparently is what is holding things up here. three lanes of the outer loop beltway remains closed at 95. and the backup here is extensive. but work continues here. no word on how long state highways or the state miswill continue their investigation. of this accident. back to you on tv hill. >> captain mike. thank you so much. well, our complete coverage does continue now, with wjz traffic control. wjz has a look at that. kristy? >> captain mike has said, the three right lanes are blocked. that has your delay now past liberty road. it is just bumper to bumper, getting through. it's going to take you at least 30 minutes. it's also impacting the inner loop. we have delays on the inner loop as well from 70 to liberty road. those delays not as significant. it should only take you about 20 minutes to get through. but the southwest side of the

village stabbing. detectivesdetectives have developed a sketch of a suspect who robbed and stabbed a 27- year-old suspect last month. it happened sunday, november 26th at a gas station in the 2200 block. the victim was treated and released at the hospital. anyone who recognizes the suspect should call police. a virginia teenager is free, after five months in captivity in the jungle in the philippines. denise has more on the teen's daring escape. >> reporter: well, kevin lundsman will be heading home in time for the holidays. the 14-year-old was on vacation with his family in july, when they were kidnapped by muslim militants. his mother was released and his cousin escaped. he said he tricked his captors by earning their trust. then asking to go to a nearby river to bathe. when he was alone, he took off into the jungle. kevin's father called him a hero. >> he went two days in the

jungle. and i'm so proud of my son. and i really think everybody in the community, whatever they did, thank you. >> kevin is currently in the hospital in manila, getting treatment for bruises. >> kevin's father says he should be home in a week. >> former penn state football coach, joe paterno faces difficulties with his health. paterno is hospitalized after a fall in his home. but he's not expected to need surgery. he is also undergoing treatment for lung cancer. he was fired last month, in connection with the sex abuse scandal. >> and paterno's former colleague, jerry san dunky sandusky is preparing to go to court for the first time on child molestation charges. but a new report has the accuracy on what is given to him. >> the preliminary hearing will be the public's first chance to hear directly from some of the young men who claim sandusky

sexually abused them as children. jerry sandusky will be there to hear their testimony, too. and his lawyer says -- >> well, he's dreading it. as you can imagine, he's going to have to sit in a courtroom, with a couple hundred people. i understand, it's going to be filled to capacity, including members of his family and friends who are going to listen to some of these young men say horrific things occurred between them and jerry. >> reporter: and cbs news has learned that a key prosecution witness is also scheduled to testify. mike mcqueary. mcqueary is the former penn state assistant coach, who told a grand jury that in 2002, he saw jerry sandusky in a locker room shower on the penn state campus, sexually assaulting a young boy. according to the grand jury report, he says he saw a boy he estimated to be 10 years old, with his hands up against the wall, be being haiped by a naked sandusky. but a local newspaper report sunday raised new questions

about whether mcqueary may have told a different story back then. the harrisburg patriot news, quoting a source, says that after the incident, mcqueary went to his father's home, where a family friend, dr. jonathan dranoff. he says at the time, mcqueary heard sex sounds, saw a young boy stick his head around the corner and an adult arm reached around and pulled the boy back. the paper said dranoff told grand jurors, he asked him several times if he saw anything sexual, and several times, mcqueary said no. at dranoff's home sunday, a woman declined to comment. >> we're not opening the door. goodbye. >> reporter: mcqueary also declined to speak. >> and that was anna werner, reporting from state college. sandusky will not testify tomorrow. and no cameras will be allowed in the courtroom. another former head of a

passengers screens complaints. in tonight's healthwatch, doctors struggling to understand the minds of autistic children. randall pinkston reports for wjz. the answer may be in the eyes. >> mike and laura chavalino have their hands full with 7- year-old triplets. two of them, michael and francesca have autism. like most kids with the disorder, both have trouble identifying emotions in others. they're more likely to focus on octs. >> there is a difference in what they are focused on. >> now, scientists believe the blink of an eye may help explain why. >> the less a child blinks, the more they're paying attention to what is happening. >> reporter: in a new study, researchers tracked the blink rate of children watching a video of kids playing. during emotional scenes, the rates for typical children

an out-of-control car strikes six people in seattle.

five men and one woman were hit. one person is critically injured. and the car is considered a total loss. the victims were reportedly hit after leaving a bar as it was closing. police say alcohol may have been a factor. a facebook post leads police to the discovery of three bodies in indiana. one man man got an address. a woman in washington state saw that post. she called police who later found the remains. the investigation is ongoing. one couple is celebrating more than just their wedding vows. the broid to be had her car and wedding dress stolen. police spotted the car, pulled it over and arrested the driver. the couple is happy to have their car and of course, the special dress back. gop front runner newt gingrich is facing more questions about his personal life, including his extramarital affair with his staffer when he was speaker of
